Email Stuck in Queue at SMTP Relay to Remote Active Directory Site

Recently one of my friend located at Remote Directory Site was not able to Send/Receive emails and asked me for the resolution. Upon looking at the actual issue, I found that Emails are working fine for Local Users but the Emails are not working for Remote site users in Exchange Server 2010.

I am discussion this issue here because it may also works for others who are facing the same issue.

Symptoms of Error SMTP Relay to Remote Active Directory Site

  • The Sent emails may got Stuck in the "SMTP Relay to Remote Active Directory Site".
  • Your Telnet Server FQDN will return "220 **********************"
  • You will found that Ping Command is giving the required output.
  • The Send Emails will be present in Sent Item Folder

How to Resolve SMTP Relay to Remote Active Directory Site Issue

By looking at the Symptoms explained above, it is pretty much clear that the problem is due to the network problem and if it is due to the network problem then contact with your Network Troubleshooter to troubleshoot the issue

If the issue is not due to the Firewall or network problem then try re-assigning the Self Signed Original Certificate to the SMT service. Don't use third part CA signed certificate (even if it has correct SAN for internal FQDN). After that restart transport services. Hope this will help in resolving the issue.
